【News】Great News! Sichuan-Tibet (Ya'an-Nyinchi) Railway is on the Way!

Sichuan provincial government recently announced on its official website that the "opening up of the grand corridor" is the top priority. Among them, the construction of railway  is the most important.

It proposes to start the construction of Ya'an--Nyingchi section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway in 2020.

About Sichuan-Tibet Railway

The Sichuan-Tibet Railway, which connects Chengdu in Sichuan with Lhasa in Tibet, which is the second major railway route into Tibet after the Qinghai-Tibet railway.

This railway is divided into four sections, of which the Chengdu to Ya'an section and the Lhasa to Nyingchi section were started in 2014. The former has been in operation since December 2018.

"Project of the Century"

The Sichuan-Tibet Railway is known as the "Project of the Century".

In February 1897, Britain obtained the right to build the Burma Railway. In the signed treaty, Britain envisioned a direct route from India through Sichuan to Tibet via the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze river.

From 1917 to 1919, Sun Yat-sen compiled the Industrial Plan and shceduled the Sichuan-Tibet Railway from Lhasa to Chengdu.

In the 1950s, the newly founded People's Republic of China began to investigate the Sichuan-Tibet Railway project.

So the planning of the Sichuan-Tibet railway has crossed three centuries.

"World's Hardest Railway to Build"

Sichuan-Tibet Railway starts from Chengdu and reaches Lhasa via Ya'an, Kangding and Nyingchi. It crosses 10 large rivers, more than 20 snow mountains with alatitude higher than 4000 meters. The total drop of the railway is about  14,000 meters, like riding a roller coaster.

Meanwhile, it has to undergo many severe tests such as large topographical altitude difference, serious geological disasters and fragile ecological environment.

Many top railway experts agree that it is the "world's hardest railway to build" unanimously.

Tourism

The construction of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway linking Tibet and Sichuan, has facilitated transportation and tourism.
