Hot Springs in Tibet

There are several famous hot springs in Tibet. We will introduce the characters of each spring, the tips of enjoying the hot springs so travelers can have a better idea before planning the trip to Tibet.

Woka Hot Spring - Private Hot Spring for Panchen Lama

Woka Hot Spring has been divided into white water, black water, hot water, warm water and cold water according to the temperature and colors by local people. The white water comes from the snow-capped mountains. Its melted snow looks like milk in summer. The black water comes from the White Golden Valley. It's called "the Three God River" together with White Water and Dragon River by local Tibetans. It represents the Guanyin Bodhisattva, the King Guardian Deity and the Wenshu Bodhisattva.


The Woka Hot Springs is represented by 4 hot springs. The first one is Zhuo Rom Hatem Hot Spring, famous for the private hot spring for Panchen Lama. It's also the hottest hot springs in Woka and well known for its cure for disease. The second one in the north, can treat gastropathy according to local people. The third one to the north of Woka Zong Ruins, is the most popular one for local Tibetans. The fourth hot spring is especially for youth people and lovers.

  


Yangpachen Hot Spring - Hot Spring at Foot of Glacier

The famous Yangpachen Hot Spring is close by the Qinghai-Tibet Highway in the Damxung County. Yangpachen is known for its geothermal scenery and the only place where people can enjoy the hot spring at the altitude of 4,200 meters. Throughout the year, hot water keeps the temperature of 70℃. The most interesting scene appears when the throttle valve is turned on, boiling water and steam will burst straight into the sky. On the background of the great Nyenchen Tangula Mountains and the vast green pasture, the white steam dragon is clearly visible several kilometers away. Tidrum Hot Spring - Magic Healing Power

Tidrum Hot Spring is the finest hot spring in central Tibet. The spring is situated right near a river, where the water bubbles under a great rock and disappears. There are 3 hot spring pools (men, women and mixed) with attractive stone surrounded by wooden fencing. You can get a hot stone treatment, of sorts -- you can feel the hot stones when you step into the pool.

  


Mangpu Hot Spring - Unique Treatment Power

Mangpu Hot Spring is located at an elevation of 4800 meters. Local people call it "unique hot spring which can cure hundreds of different diseases" due to its special therapeutic characteristics. Throughout the year, it maintains about 50℃. It's not suggested to stay too long in the water due to the high temperature. After the bathing, local people, instead of putting on clothes immediately, will only cover themselves in a rug or quilt and rest for about 15 minutes so they can sweat the germs, poisons out, by which one becomes healthy. If you visit this wonderful hot spring, you should follow the local customs.

  


Kangbu Hot Spring - Famous Hot Spring Home and Abroad

With 14 spring mouths, Kangbu Hot Spring has very special treatment effect. According to local people, some mouths can cure orthopedics, dermatology, gynecopathy, headache, heart disease and so on, which makes it famous even in Bhutan. It has rich mineral substance, plenty trees and fertile earth and 12 of its 14 mouths has been developed into well-equipped bathhouses, where male and female could bath together. If you really want to get significant curative effect, it's suggested to have at least 2 courses of treatment respectively in spring and autumn, and every course will last about 21 days.

  


Riduo Hot Spring – Holy Spring & Mystery Water

Riduo Hot Spring had been used over thousand years according to Tibetan history. When bathing in it, people will get relaxed and it can adjust blood as well as Yin and Yang. Local Tibetan believe that this hot spring can wash away greedy, angry, foolish, lazy and envy. Thus, the local saying goes, “Drink it; the spirit can be baptism. Bath in it; the skin can be cleaned”. It has the function of curing 108 kinds of diseases including skin, joint, rheumatism, nerve, cardiovascular and pulmonary and so on, being regarded as “manna of eight merits and virtues”.  

  


Tips:

1. It's better to bring your own swimming suits, or you will need to buy one at the hot spring.

2. Do not bath when you are hungry or drunk. Please soak after at least 1 hour if you have just ate meals.

3. Remember to take off all your metal jewelry or accessories before bathing, preventing them from being eroded by certain minerals.

4. It is not advisable to soak for a long time. Normally speaking, you can soak for 15 to 20 minutes per time and rest for a while before take another one.

5. Avoid doing active exercises when bathing, especially in highland.
